Spinal disc herniation treatment
Spinal disc herniation is a common pathology that occurs most often in older dogs and so-called “long-bodied” dogs. It is a rapidly progressing disease that, if treatment is not started in time, can leave sad consequences for the pet.
Symptoms of spinal herniation appear unexpectedly – a dog that has spent its whole life being active one day begins to have difficulty walking or loses control of its limbs. Herniations cause not only great pain but also disrupt the innervation of limbs and internal organs, which can impair the pet’s ability to urinate and defecate. Spinal herniations are diagnosed through clinical examination and contrast radiography or computed tomography. The first measure for treating spinal herniations is medical treatment; however, if it does not yield the desired results and improvement, then surgical intervention is required. The essence of surgical treatment is to remove the herniation and release the spinal nerves so that the pet can move again. After spinal herniation surgeries, a long period of recovery and a course of physiotherapy are required.
At “Siaurio Šnauceris” veterinary clinics, we have been successfully treating pets’ spinal herniations for 13 years, and we rejoice in the positive results and happy patients and their owners.
