Pet Colitis
Colitis is an inflammation of the large intestine (colon) and is a fairly common condition in both dogs and cats. It is most often characterized by chronic or acute diarrhea of unknown origin. The large intestine plays a vital role in maintaining fluid and electrolyte balance, as well as absorbing nutrients. When normal colon function is disrupted, the following clinical symptoms may occur:
- Frequent diarrhea;
- Fresh red blood observed in the stool;
- Watery, mucousy, or sometimes greenish stools;
- Vomiting;
- Abdominal pain;
- Frequent straining or attempts to defecate;
- Weight loss, etc.
Colitis can be caused by poisoning, feeding bones, polyps or tumors in the large intestine, infections, parasites, and other factors. To determine the exact cause of the ailment, “Siaurio Šnauceris” veterinary clinics will perform a fecal cytology and all necessary blood tests for your pet. If your pet suffers from recurring colitis, we recommend a colonoscopy (an endoscopic method for diagnosing and treating diseases of the large intestine, during which polyps can be removed or biopsies taken).
If you notice these symptoms, or if your pet appears lethargic or is losing weight, it is essential to seek veterinary assistance as soon as possible.
