Intraocular pressure measurement
Just like in humans, an animal’s eyes are one of the most important sensory organs, on which health, orientation in the environment, and coordination depend, making them indispensable in everyday life. It is gratifying that modern veterinary medicine can offer a wide range of preventive and diagnostic tools to help you preserve your beloved pets’ vision. So today, we will discuss one of them – the eye tonometry test.
The eye tonometry test is designed to measure intraocular pressure, the increase of which is often a sign of a serious eye disease – glaucoma. The disease is insidious because it shows no symptoms at the beginning; however, as the disease progresses, the eye color may change, the eye enlarges, and the pet feels pain and becomes apathetic. Glaucoma that is not diagnosed in time or is left untreated is a common cause of blindness in pets, so regular checking of intraocular pressure is an important preventive measure, which we recommend applying to pets from 5 years of age once a year. It is important to mention that regular checking of intraocular pressure is also extremely important for pets already diagnosed with cataracts, as there is a high probability that intraocular pressure will rise and glaucoma will develop.
The tonometry test is performed quickly, accurately, and is completely painless for the pet, requiring no special preparation or anesthesia, so it is not worth delaying out of fear that the pet will experience stress. Prevention is the path to a healthy and high-quality life for your pet!
