Adrenal gland testing
The adrenal glands are small endocrine glands located near the kidneys. They regulate the body’s entire metabolism, and blood pressure, and are responsible for the immune system. When the adrenal glands do not produce a sufficient amount of hormones, it can lead to adrenal insufficiency, resulting in hypoadrenocorticism (Addison’s disease).
The most common symptoms of hypoadrenocorticism include:
- Apathy;
- Diarrhea;
- Vomiting;
- Weight loss;
- Increased thirst;
- Increased urination;
- Dermatological issues.
Conversely, when the adrenal glands produce an excessive amount of hormones, hyperadrenocorticism (Cushing’s syndrome) develops. If suffering from this problem, a pet may experience:
- Polyuria (excessive urination), polydipsia (pathological thirst), and polyphagia (morbidly increased appetite);
- Exercise intolerance and shortness of breath;
- Increased abdominal girth (pot-bellied appearance);
- Muscle weakness.
Dermatological changes:
- Symmetrical alopecia (hair loss);
- Hyperpigmentation;
- Comedones (blackheads);
- “Thin skin”;
- Impaired hair growth.
If you notice even a few of the symptoms listed above, it is essential to have your pet examined by a veterinarian. The doctor will perform the necessary blood tests and prescribe the most effective treatment so that your four-legged companion can continue to enjoy a high-quality life!
